How I Leveled Up While My First FPV Controller Was on Its Way

A small moment between two milestones — waiting for my first real FPV radio while pushing my skills further inside the simulator. What felt like a pause became one of the most productive phases in my FPV journey.

The Transition Point

After completing the Beginner section in DRL’s Train to Fly, one thing became clear:

The Xbox controller had taken me as far as it could.

It helped me survive the first chaotic days in FPV Sims. It taught me how to react, how to correct, how to keep the drone in the air.

But to build real skill — the kind that matters when flying a real quad — I needed to move closer to an actual FPV setup.

A real transmitter was the next step.

Searching for My First FPV Radio

Once I started researching transmitters, a whole new world opened:

Radiomaster, TBS, Jumper, Boxer, Zorro…

Everyone has their favorite. Everyone says theirs is the “correct” beginner choice.

I chose the RadioMaster Zorro.

Why? I’ll explain the full reasoning in a dedicated blog and video — and whether it turned out to be the right decision.

But the moment I clicked “Order”, everything changed.

Ordering From China

To save money, I ordered the Zorro directly from China.

Estimated delivery time:

11 days.

And suddenly I was stuck in a strange mix of excitement and impatience.

Leveling Up Anyway

I decided:

If I can’t practice with the new controller yet, I’ll push the Xbox controller to its absolute limit.

So during the waiting time, I completed the entire:

Intermediate section of DRL’s “Train to Fly”.

Still on the Xbox controller.

Still with centered throttle.

Still with all the disadvantages — but also with the benefit that I had to fly very clean to compensate.

This phase turned out to be incredibly valuable. I learned to fly intentionally instead of reactively.

More flow.

More control.

More understanding.

Preparing for the Next Step

Those 11 days didn’t slow me down — they prepared me.

Prepared me for the moment the Zorro would finally arrive.

Prepared me for the transition into the “real FPV world”.

Prepared me for a completely new chapter in my FPV journey.

And that chapter deserves its own story.
